The biological activities of the pentose (PNA) and desoxypentose nucleic acids (DNA) are discussed. Bacterial PNA inhibit certain streptococcal desoxyribonucleases. Bacterial DNA are known to act as transforming principles or heredity determinants. Methods are described for the isolation and purification of DNA from Hemophilus influenzae active as transforming principles in concentrations 3 × 10 −4 /γcc. The inactivation by heat, changes of pH and ionic strength, desoxyribonuclease, and formaldehyde is studied.
