HE first report o k sarcoma arising in bone T subjected to irradiation was that ok Beck,3 who in 1922 published an account of three cases arising in previously normal bone included within the beam of roentgen-ray therapy for tuberculous arthritis. Other reports followed; by 1948, Cahan, Woodard, Stewart, Higinbotham, and Coley were able to collect seventeen cases from the European literature, of which sixteen arose in bones from three to eleven years after treatment with external radiation. T h e seventeenth case (N@rgaard's) was of a somewhat different nature, in that it lollowed the intra-articular injection ol radium chloride for tuberculous arthritis.
