Theoretical study demonstrates sensory integration principles for inclusive design, highlighting sensory and emotional mechanisms to support diverse cognitive and physical needs.
To realize the idea of inclusive design as an extensive and comprehensive design concept, it is necessary to study design from an inclusive perspective considering physical characteristics and the characteristics of disorders, such as cognitive thinking, behavior, and emotion. This study classified the types of sensory-friendly inclusive design into ‘Tactile sense’, ‘Proprioceptive sense’, and ‘Vestibular sense’ based on sensory integration theory. Additionally, we found that sensory-friendly experiences can be realized through the ‘stimulation and interception of body sensory’, ‘emphasizing stimuli as sensory intermediaries’ and ‘emotional connections’ through them. Therefore, the framework of the sensory-friendly inclusive design in this study was structured according to the linkage structure of the sensory-friendly experience theory, and inclusive design elements, presenting the factors considered important in sensory-friendly inclusive design.
