We summarize the results of a theoretical model, developed to investigate the performance of a frequency converter based on four-wave mixing in a bulk traveling wave amplifier. The theory predicts very high values of conversion efficiency and signal-to-background ratio in the bandwidth of the converted signal. These results, whose experimental confirmation is reported elsewhere, increase the potential of using four-wave mixing in semiconductor amplifiers in actual optical systems.
