Highlights the importance of early identification and ED-ICU collaboration for critically ill patients in the emergency department.
May guide ED protocols for critically ill patients; leaves open the need for prospective trials to quantify benefits.
The number of critically ill patients presenting to emergency departments (EDs) in the United States is on the rise, with increasing length of ED stay. Early identification of these patients with initiation of specific interventions may improve outcomes, similar to the resuscitation of a trauma patient in the “golden hour.” Close collaboration between physicians in the ED and ICU is essential to ensure delivery of optimal critical care, regardless of underlying pathology and patient location.
