Overview

These cut-offs may aid metabolic risk screening in Koreans; hypothesis-generating and requires prospective validation before wider use.

Structured PICO

P
Population
413 Korean adults (174 men and 239 women) aged 18-70 years who visited obesity clinics at two hospitals in Korea from January 1999 to August 2005. Excluded individuals with secondary causes of obesity, pregnant/lactating women, and severe hepatic or renal disease.
O
Outcome
Cut-off values for visceral fat area and waist circumference associated with an increase in risk of obesity-related disorders (hypertension, hyperglycemia, and dyslipidemia)surrogate

In a Korean adult population, a visceral fat area of 103.8 cm2 and waist circumferences of 89.8 cm in men and 86.1 cm in women were identified as optimal cut-offs for predicting obesity-related metabolic disorders.

Limitations

  • Recruited subjects from a specialty clinic, limiting generalizability to the general Korean population
  • Limited information on smoking habits, alcohol use, and exercise
  • Small number of study subjects
