Tethering of gold colloids to surfaces modified with, e.g., selfassembled monolayers (SAMs), can lead to changes of properties. The characterization by atomic force microscopy of an SAM surface coated with gold colloid and its use as a substrate for the growth of CaCO3 crystals, an important biomineral, are described. The Figure shows scanning electron micrographs of CaCO3 grown on pure gold and colloid-coated gold surfaces.
