Morphological changes in brown adipose tissue of newborn rats induced by norepinephrine injection include a swelling of the mitochondria and a decreased fat content. The mitochondrial swelling is gradually more pronounced with time and reaches its maximum 30 minutes after injection of the hormone. A regression towards an unswollen state is then observed, but morphological changes are still found 60 minutes after the injection. Lipolysis continues over the period of time measured. Hormonally evoked respiratory stimulation and the mitochondrial swelling in the tissue seem to reach their maximum simultaneously.
