Book reviewed in this article: Psychiatric theory and practice have been criticized as being sexist in orientation, as having perpetuated and encouraged inequalities between the sexes. In reviewing the literature from psychoanalytic, psychiatric, psychological, sociological, and physiological sources, the authors find overwhelming evidence that our teaching and practice have too often been based upon unsubstantiated and even incorrect premises. As professionals, the authors maintain, we have a responsibility to reassess our basic tenets and address ourselves to these issues.
