Despite differences in flow velocity and inundation duration, the effects on the coastal infrastructure in the inundation zones of Hurricane Katrina and the Indian Ocean tsunami of December 2004 were remarkably similar. Surveying the effects of Hurricane Katrina will no doubt assist in the ongoing study of tsunami loading on coastal construction.
