A long term wave recording program based on the west coast of New Zealand has allowed a number of fundamental properties of the ocean-wave field to be studied. This paper deals with wave-generation processes and in particular compares the spectral properties of fetch-limited seas with those found in the JONSWAP and other Northern Hemisphere studies.
