Adults eligible for cardiac rehabilitation following an acute coronary syndrome with new-onset depressive symptoms on initial nurse assessment, excluding those treated for depression in the preceding 6 months (n=38 total; 9 in feasibility study, 29 in pilot RCT).

Intervention

Enhanced psychological care (EPC) comprising nurse-led mental health-care co-ordination and behavioural activation within cardiac rehabilitation.

Comparator

Usual cardiac rehabilitation care.

Outcome

Process measures related to cardiac team and patient recruitment, and participant retention at 5- and 8-month follow-ups.

While enhanced psychological care is valued by patients and nurses in cardiac rehabilitation, significant workload constraints and recruitment challenges suggest dedicated mental health practitioners may be required.
