Emphasizes the importance of a shared emergency department protocol for the rapid management of warfarin-induced bleeding to reduce mortality and complications.
Presently, warfarin is the oral anticoagulant most commonly employed in Italy. Posology of this medicine is biased by many factors, as the patient clinical condition, diet or other medicines. The main complication linked to the assumption of this hardly digestible medicine is hemorrhage, both as a major and minor event. Hemorrhagic risk is more relevant in the weak population of aged patients; this is why the emergency department should follow a shared protocol, aiming to the quick identification and resolution of warfarin caused bleeding, in order to limit mortality and long term complications.
