The potential of a microinductor utilizing a thin film magnetic alloy magnetic component is investigated via a simplified optimal design procedure. A well-established solenoid geometry is utilized to compare commercially available and electrodeposited alloys. Analytical and experimental analysis is concerned with the MHz frequency range for dc–dc converters. Inductance values ranging from 0.3 µH to 120 µH with component power efficiency above 90% have been measured. An optimal design process is developed based on preliminary data providing a device with a power density of 28 W cm −3 and power efficiency of 94%.
