Samples of calcium carbonate and of magnesium carbonate have been calcined for two hours at a succession of fixed temperatures in the range 600° to 1400°. The ‘activity’ of the product–assessed by measurements of the rates of dissolution, of slaking, and of bulk density–shows a maximum at about 900° for calcium oxide and at about 700° for magnesium oxide. A tentative explanation is proposed.
