Colloid and Surface Chemical Aspects of Mesophases (Liquid Crystals)

The characteristic behaviour of mesophases, especially anomalies observed in the surface tension and viscosity in some thermotropic mesophases, are discussed on the basis of thermodynamic and molecular kinetic theories.Experimental data are presented for the surface and ll.ow properties found in some lyotropic mesophases involved in the ternary systems: ammonium alkanoate + water + n-octanol; cetyltrimethylammonium bromide + water + n- hexanol.Using these experimental data, the correlation between mesophases and colloidal systems is discussed with reference to the theories developed by Wo.Ostwald.
