TaS2 layers act as oxidizing agent and on intercalation of ammonia convert part of the NH3 into N2. The compound (NH)x(NH3)1 − x [TaS2]x − (x ≈ 0.1) is formed. This ionic model explains the unusual orientation of the NH3 molecules (C3 axis parallel to layer).
