Electrodeposition has been shown to be a promising method for the manufacturing of 3D current collectors and the coating of these with active electrode material as well as electrolytes usable for microbatteries. Within the next few years more work on the electrodeposition of cathode materials onto 3D current collectors and electrodeposition of electrolytes can be anticipated, as well as the demonstration of complete 3D microbattery devices. Throughout this process, more emphasis needs to be placed on the development of a fundamental understanding of the different electrodeposition processes; as such an understanding will be essential for the development and optimization of 3D microbatteries.
