The attenuation of elastic surface waves propagating on an arbitrarily oriented surface of a dielectric crystal has been calculated. Contributions to the attenuation from heat conduction and viscosity are considered. The result is valid when the sound wavelength is much greater than the thermal-phonon mean free path. Comparison is made with the experimental measurements of Salzmann et al. in quartz, and good agreement is obtained.
