A model r epresen ting t he mechani cal response of a rubberlike polym er is d erived , using t he same molec ular concep ts of ent ropy elasticity a nd a viscous para meter expressing in teractions between polymer molec ul es e mployed by R ouse, Buec he, and Zimm in thei r molec ular theories.Since t he model developed here r eprese nts the m ec hanical response of a chain, rather t ha n representing t he chain itself, it can be modifi ed m ore easily t han t hese strict molec ular t heories to i nclud e effects due to enta nglem ents between chains which modify the cha racter of the viscosity-molec ular weight relationship at a crit ical m olecu lar weight. This m odifi cation is in trod uced, t he results for both stead y-state and transient response funct ions are calcu lated , and t hese result s compared w it h experiment for t he " standard " polyisobutyle ne.The agreement ind icates t hat the same "entanglements," whatever t heir precise natu re, a re respon sible for the proportionality of viscosity to M 3 .•for a high molec ular we ight polymer, the s teady-s tate elastic compli ance, a nd t he pseu do-equ ilibr ium co mplia nce at in term ed iate t im es or fr eq uencies.
