Two lead-cadmium phosphate glasses were prepared by reaction of PbCl2 and CdCl2 with NH4H2PO4. 31P MAS-NMR shows that the glass network reticulation depends on the batch composition. The XPS O1s photopeak is decomposed into components associated with brindging and non-bridging oxygens. Moreover, a third component is attributed to O involved in Pb-O-P bonds which contribute to the network reticulation. The decomposition of the O1s core level is in agreement with the analytical glass compositions. No P-Cl bonds are detected in the C12p photopeak. P2p, Pb 4f7/2 and Cd 3d5/2 binding energy do not reflect the compositional dependance of the network polymerization.
