Prospective cohort study examines long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes in late preterm infants with hypoglycemia, suggesting important implications for monitoring practices.
Neonatal hypoglycemia is among the most common problems in neonatology, however uncertainty about optimal thresholds and the duration of monitoring persist. Balasundaram et al. report the results of a multicentre well-defined prospective cohort study assessing neurodevelopmental outcomes at 18–24 months’ corrected age in late preterm born infants (≥35–36/6 weeks’ gestation, ≥2000 g) who were either hypoglycemic or euglycemic according to American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) screening guidelines during the first 24 h of life.
