Observational data on the time evolution of the concentrations of drops and ice particles in glaciating cumuli exhibiting an ice particle enhancement mechanism are compared with results of a mathematical simulation model. the model deals with kinetic equations for each type of cloud particle. Sensitivity tests concerning parameters related to the rime‐splinter process show that observations and numerical simulation results agree well when a rate corresponding to 140 to 250 droplets with diameter greater than 20‐25 μm producing one ice splinter is applied. Moreover, in estimating from model results the time interval over which the ice particle concentration increases by a factor of 10 4 , a reasonable span of 50 min is obtained.
