A technique which is a combination of Galerkin's method and variational principle was developed and used for the approximate solution of creeping flow of power‐law fluid over a Newtonian fluid sphere. The stream functions (both internal and external) and drag coefficient are expressed in terms of three parameters: the flow behavior index of the power law fluid, the external Reynolds number, and a viscosity ratio parameter {article}{empty}{document}X = μ ian - 1 KV_α n - 1{document} . Comparisons with existing experimental data are also given.
