We have previously described the goitrogenic and antithyroid properties of lithium when administered to rats. The current study demonstrates that in rats Li† is concentrated by thyroid tissue to a level 2.5–3 times greater than serum. This tissue⁄serum concentration ratio is attained within 1 hr following iv LiCl and is maintained in animals chronically treated with Li2CO3 for 153 days. Of all the tissues examined by us or by others, this is the highest ratio noted. (Endocrinology87: 1085, 1970)
