In Brief The British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy Working Party on Neurosurgical Infections evaluated published evidence for the efficacy of antimicrobial prophylaxis in patients undergoing spinal surgery. The conclusions are reported, and recommendations for the prevention of surgical site infections in general and discitis in patients undergoing procedures that violate one or more discs are provided. The roles of intraoper-ative antibiotic or antiseptic wound irrigation and drains are also reviewed.
