Consideration is given to the Na ‐ Na + and Na ‐ NaO equilibrium in the Earth's atmosphere. It is probable that in the region of 100 km the free sodium is almost completely ionized and that the concentration of the ions relative to the main atmospheric constituents increases upwards. A possible interpretation to be attached to this is mentioned. It is pointed out that the current theory of the nocturnal emission of the D ‐lines is not reconcilable with the measured altitude of the emitting layer.
