Testosterone propionate (TP) implants into the preoptic anterior hypothalamic region of adult castrate male rats restore the complete copulatory response pattern. Other hypothalamic implant locations were less effective or produced no response. Implants located in the mammillary region resulted in hyperexcitability in the presence of the female but mounting did not occur. A complete mating response resulted only after bilateral implantation of a blob of TP in the anterior hypothalamus. Smaller surface areas of TP and all implant sizes of testosterone were less effective. None of these implants resulted in repair of the sexual accessary organs. (Endocrinology80: 754, 1967)
