A simple procedure is described for producing thin polymer/drug discs of predetermined thickness, surface area and drug load. Discs were cut after solvent evaporation from a film obtained by mixing separate ethanolic solutions of poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) and ergotamine tartrate, the latter solution containing added tartaric acid to enhance drug solubility. Established partial degradation of drug was evidenced by the colouration developed during casting. However, the calculated drug content of a disc accorded well with the total ergotalkaloids content measured by fluorescence on completely released drug.
