The purpose of this review paper is to examine the effects of age on skeletal muscle. However, this is often difficult to assess because of the high correlation between increasing age and decreasing physical activity. The skeletal muscles which are used frequently show few structural and functional changes with age. Functional, morphological and biochemical changes will be discussed, with attention given to effects of exercise, ageing and disuse on each of these changes. Consideration of normal muscle tissue will be addressed initially so that it can be contrasted with ageing or inactive skeletal muscle.
