Nearly monodisperse styrene and methyl methacrylate polymers of high molecular weight have been prepared by anionic polymerization at low temperatures. A. single‐stage vapour addition method has been used to mix the catalyst and monomer. Styrene was polymerized by Na‐biphenyl in tetrahydrofuran, and methyl methacrylate by Li‐biphernyl in dimethoxyethane as the solvent. The poly(methyl methacrylate) was syndiotactic. Deviations from ideal monodispersity and the appearance of bimodal distributions have been interpreted in terms of two kinds of active centers during polymerization: ion‐pairs and free anions. A quantitative estimate of both kinds has been carried out.
