The electronic structure of the Ni 3 Fe alloy, in the ordered and disordered phases, has been investigated by soft X-ray emission and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The densities of states deduced from these two types of experiment are compared with those of the pure elements and related to the current discussion on transition metal alloys, with emphasis on the order-disorder transition. It is found that transition effects predicted by density of states calculations are not confirmed by the experimental spectra.
