1,166 adults (aged ≥18 years) with no previous renal insufficiency (preoperative serum creatinine ≤1.6 mg/dL for men and ≤1.4 mg/dL for women) who underwent scheduled or emergency noncardiac surgery with an overnight admission and >12 hours of PACU stay. Median age 64, 65% male, single-center (Portugal).

Outcome
Development of acute kidney injury (AKI) during PACU stay, defined by AKIN criteria (increment of serum creatinine ≥0.3 mg/dL or 50% from baseline within 48 hours or urine output <0.5 mL/kg/hr for >6 hours despite fluid resuscitation)surrogate

In patients with normal baseline renal function undergoing major noncardiac surgery, postoperative AKI occurs in 7.5% of cases and is independently associated with a more than threefold increase in hospital mortality.
