The relation between particle loss and fluctuation level is studied. Stable discharges are found in hydrogen under conditions of long mean free path and high shear, and with gases of high mass under almost all conditions. A comparison is made of the plasma loss in stable and unstable regions. Wave diffusion is estimated from correlation measurements. Particle loss rate and fluctuation level are found to be essentially uncorrelated.
