Health workers of the Fengsheng Neighborhood of the West District of Peking were observed and interviewed by the author in September 1972. These workers ranged from Western-type specialist physicians to housewives serving as Red Medical Workers for residents' committees. Patterns observed suggest large elements of “decentralization,” “deprofessionalization,” and motivation based on a value system honoring service to others and self-reliance, while deprecating personal gain for the health worker.
