Abstract

Abstract. Diving metabolism has been studied in the domestic duck. The oxygen consumption from the lung air decreased very markedly, and the total consumption of oxygen as calculated from all stores was only some 20% of the pre‐dive level. The body temperature also dropped steadily in spite of an increased thermal insulation, due to peripheral vasoconstriction. It is concluded that the energy metabolism is greatly depressed during a quiet dive.
