This study investigated the family climate in which creative behavior in young children develops. Measures involved the instrumental-expressive orientation, role tension, and degree of autonomy-granting of the parents of more and less creative children. Twenty-four middle-class children, ages four and five, and their parents were selected for study. The parents of highcreative children had less domestic value consensus and more role tension than the parents of low-creative children, reflecting an emphasis on individual divergence and expression of feeling. There were no significant differences between parents of highand low-creative children in their degree of autonomy-granting.
