The mean duration of oestrus in two‐tooth and mixed‐age Merino ewes was 10.8 and 12.8 hours respectively (not significant, range 2–24 hours). Live weight of ewes also had no significant effect on the duration of oestrus. Ram‐seeking activity was higher in mixed‐age ewes than in two‐tooths (P < 0.01) and was also increased in groups with a higher mean live weight (P < 0.01). An increase in paddock size reduced the percentage of ewes in both age‐groups which were mated by tethered rams (P < 0.01).
