Troponin was discovered several years ago by Ebashi and Kodama (1965, 1966a) and as yet its molecular weight has not been unequivocally established. This is not due to a lack of experimental evidence but rather to the considerable variation of the published values. An initial value of 80,000 was given by Ebashi and Endo (1968) although the same laboratory later showed a preference for a lower estimate of 50,000 (Wakabayashi quoted by Ebashi et al., 1968). Arai and Watanabe (1968) using gel filtration demonstrated that treatment with dithiothreitol caused a variation of the molecular weight between 150,000 and 44,000. These authors also calculated a value of 86,000 based on the sedimentation constant and intrinsic viscosity of troponin. Drabikowski et al.
