Free oscillations, surface wave dispersion, travel times, and high-resolution body data, combined with laboratory data, provide constraints on the composition state of the various regions of the earth. Anderson & Hart (1976) have recently an earth model based on a large body of free oscillation and travel time . This model, designated C2, incorporates structure in both the mantle and core using special high-resolution body wave techniques. Much of the structure is the resolving power of such gross earth data as free oscillation periods and travel times. This model, shown in Figure 1, provides an appropriate for a discussion of the composition of the various regions of the earth. Model 1066A of Gilbert & Dziewonski (1975), based on more normal mode data but less wave data, is also shown.
