Introduction Advanced practice physiotherapy in musculoskeletal therapy (APPMT) is a new model of care in which physiotherapists can perform medical procedures. However, the creation and implementation of these models, with no guidelines available, would benefit from the process previously followed by the nursing profession. This narrative review aimed to identify models and creation and implementation strategies described in the advanced nursing practice literature, and to determine transferable elements and barriers to support the future development of APPMT in health-care systems worldwide. Methods This study gathers 23 articles from the Pubmed, CINAHL, and Google Scholar databases consulted between September and December 2024 and updated until December 2025.Results No specific model-building framework exists in the literature. The ‘Participatory Evidence-based Patient-focused Process for Advanced Practice’ model is the only implementation model in advanced nursing. The main obstacles identified are financial, organizational, and communication-related. Social, and educational factors should also be considered when considering APPMT models creation.Discussion Drawing inspiration from the nursing implementation process is relevant for APPMT models creation despite professional differences. The main clinical implication lies in the need to increase clinicians’ expertise and rapidly improve their educational pathway to build APPMT models for the future.
