Why the study?
Does a larger balloon diameter setting (≥26 mm) improve the increase in mitral valve area compared to smaller settings in patients undergoing PTMC for mitral stenosis?
Population
46 patients with mitral stenosis undergoing percutaneous transvenous mitral commissurotomy (PTMC)
Comparison
Percutaneous transvenous mitral commissurotomy… vs Comparison across different balloon diameter…

Larger balloon settings were associated with greater mitral valve area gains in PTMC; leaves open whether randomized trials should define optimal sizing.
Does a larger balloon diameter setting (≥26 mm) improve the increase in mitral valve area compared to smaller settings in patients undergoing PTMC for mitral stenosis?
Using an Inoue balloon catheter with a diameter setting of 26 mm or greater during PTMC provides a significantly larger increase in mitral valve area due to adequate intra-balloon pressure.
