Data on the effect on wool of treatment with solutions of sulfuric acid of different concentrations at 5, 25, and 50 C for 15 minutes and of an 8 0-percent solution of sulfuric acid at 25 C for different lengths of time are presented. The results suggest that strong sulfuric acid r eacts with the basic groups in wool to form sulfamic acid derivatives. The acid-combining capacity of wool decreases and the base-combining capacity increases in proportion to the number of sulfamic acid groups formed.
