Randomized trial examines gender differences in monetary and effort giving in dictator games, highlighting distinct behaviors.
The data reported in this paper show that dictator game transfers depend crucially on whether money or effort are to be distributed. In a standard (monetary) version, giving is far more generous (close to equal sharing); behaviour is highly selfish in the effort version. Moreover, women are more altruistic then men when distributing money but are more selfish when distributing effort. The results suggest that the common focus on monetary transfers covers only part of the story.
