It is demonstrated that HCl molecules participate in two steps of acetylene hydrochlorination with gaseous HCl over mechanically activated K2MCl4 (M = Pt or Pd) and K2PtCl6 catalysts, namely, the hydrochlorination of π-coordinated acetylene (rate-limiting step) and protodemetallation. It is confirmed that the same intermediate—β-chlorovinyl derivative of Pt(II)—is involved in protodemetallation over the Pt-containing catalysts. Possible mechanisms of the two reaction steps are considered.
