Intravenous PC-SOD (80 mg) did not protect against anthracycline-induced cardiac damage compared to placebo in breast cancer patients, showing no differences in cardiac function or biomarkers.

Does PC-SOD prevent anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity in chemotherapy-naïve breast cancer patients?
PC-SOD at a dose of 80 mg i.v. does not provide cardioprotection against anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity in breast cancer patients.
Broeyer et al. (2014) conducted an RCT in breast cancer (n=80). PC-SOD (human recombinant super oxide dismutase bound to lecithin) vs. placebo was evaluated on protection against cardiac damage evaluated using echocardiography, QT assessments and biochemical markers. Intravenous PC-SOD (80 mg) did not protect against anthracycline-induced cardiac damage compared to placebo in breast cancer patients, showing no differences in cardiac function or biomarkers.
