Some effects of visual demarcation of territorial boundaries in bedrooms of institutionalized elderly were studied. Among the less organically involved patients, self-satisfaction increased significantly with the boundaries; no change in self-perceived sociability occurred, but general maladjustment decreased. More organically involved patients showed an improvement in mental status with territorial boundaries. Results are interpreted as supporting the importance of personal territory for a broad range of this population.
