Integrating mechanistic and clinical risk factors to improve prediction of post-operative (post-OP) atrial fibrillation (AF). Post-OP AF is a common complication following cardiac surgery, contributing to increased morbidity and healthcare burden. Several cellular mechanisms (left panel, purple)—including autonomic imbalance, altered Ca2+ handling, and inflammation—alongside with clinical risk factors (right panel, orange), such as increased age, enlarged left atrium (LA) diameter, predispose patients to post-OP AF. Integrating mechanistic and clinical parameters may significantly improve the predictive power of risk prediction models and enable more targeted preventive strategies.
