The first [2+2] cycloadducts of endohedral metallofullerenes were successfully synthesized by the addition of benzyne to Gd@C82. Two monoadducts were isolated by HPLC and characterized by MALDI TOF MS and vis-NIR as well as CV and DPV. Such novel derivatives will have potential applications in electronics.
