Experimental study reveals enhanced catalytic activity during hydrogen evolution using single-atom platinum on submonolayer MoS2–x, highlighting an effective strategy for clean fuel production.
Ideal substrates that own reasonable electronic structures and geometric conformations are necessary for the application of single-atom noble metals in catalysis. Herein, we use a remarkable submonolayer MoS 2– x substrate with unique surface properties to support single-atom Pt. Structural and electrochemical characterization revealed that the synergism between abundant S vacancies and single Pt atoms on submonolayer MoS 2– x greatly improves activity and stability during a hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), with an overpotential of 144 mV at a current density of 10 mA/cm 2 and a Tafel slope of 63 mV/dec.
